It is hard enough feeling unwanted and alone in this world for people without disabilities. Especially during the Pandemic! Imagine having special needs? How would that add to the problem?

A child growing up in today’s society with special needs has to be one of the greatest challenges ever! These children have to learn the hard task of living life and dealing with the day to day realities of their personal disabilities. This can be a challenge for both the child and the parent!

It is a known fact with any child that if they are included in family and school activities that kids are more responsive. Any mother knows this. All children love to help. It is just in their nature. They want to be a part of the action.

Children with disabilities want to be included as well. Letting these children get involved in the day to day activities and at home helps them to relate to other social settings.

In fact, children with disabilities absolutely love to be loved. And desperately want to be included! They enjoy all types of social activities! And including a schedule along with mundane tasks helps to keep them feeling like they are truly helping!

  1. Make a schedule board. Children with special needs are very responsive to schedules. Schedules help create a feeling of belonging for the child by giving them something to look forward too. The schedules also give the child a sense of responsibility and teach them the lesson of actions and rewards. This is an absolutely wonderful way of including the child in day to day activities.
  2. Learn a new instrument together. Fun for kids, parents, and teachers, this activity helps the child learn the art of patience. Children with special needs often get aggravated very easily. Learning to play a musical instrument provides a lesson in just that. It is a valuable lesson for social acceptance.
  3. Start a chore tree! All kids want to earn rewards. Children with special needs are no exception! Make a chore tree with the child. The chore tree gives a chore goal every day of the week and has a special reward for the completion of each task.
  4. Adopt a service pet! One of the greatest gestures of love today is the action of adopting an animal. Kids with disabilities have an affinity for pets. They can become companions, confidants, teachers, helpers, and best friends! A child with special needs can relate to the animal and also relies on the animal for comfort.
  5. Last but not least, all children enjoy creating! So why not teach the child the art of journal writing? Journal writing, although not for all special needs children, for some can help with language retention and comprehension and list building skills.
